Getting Started in Updating your website -- What you will need:
  • An FTP program for the PC or MAC. -- Our recommendation is Secure FX
  • Front Page, Dreamweaver or other WYSIWYG editor to make changes

Your site is hosted on a Linux system - and Front page publishing will not work.  Therefore you cannot publish with Frontpage.  Your website can be editted with Frontpage and then the files transferred through FTP.

The method files are transferred to the web server is called "FTP" (File Transport Protocol). You have access via FTP 24-hours a day. You can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure.

Configuring Your FTP Software

The following information is needed to connect to your web site via FTP:

  • USERID
  • PASSWORD
  • FTP HOSTNAME  ( Pre 2001: wsp5.webshowhost.com  Post 2001: wsp4.webshowhost.com )

The hostname tells your FTP software to connect to the web server where your web site resides. In general, the method to configure the various FTP software programs are the same - but please refer to the documentation associated with the FTP client you are using.

How to Transfer Files

When you connect to the web server, you will connect directly to your  file storage directory for your account. Most FTP clients will display a split screen where files on the left-hand side (Local System) are server.   within your  own computer.  Files and directories on right-hand side (Remote System) are located on the

Your website is located in the "docs" directory and all images should be placed in the "images" directory.

First download your website onto your hard drive.  At that point, you can edit the HTML files with Front Page.

  • If your website was built prior to the year 2000 by Nicayla Enterprises, Inc., your website is in straight HTML (all files editable)
  • If your website was built between 2000 and 2004, it is a dynamically created website and the content pages are .html files.  All of these are editable.
  • If your website was built after April of 2004, it consists of only PHP files and these can be edited directly - but you must be careful not to delete any of the include files.

Acceptable File Names

To prevent errors, we suggest naming all files in lowercase. Spaces and  and special control characters are generally not a good idea. The underscore character ("_") is acceptable. You should avoid special  characters ( ! @ # $ % ^ & * : ' ) in file names. We suggest that you keep the length of file names to a minimum. The tilde (~) cannot be used in directory or file names.

Using FrontPage or Dreamweaver

We suggest taking a short course in using Frontpage, Dreamweaver or the editor of your choice.  It is also beneficial to walk through the tutorials that came with your software.  Here is an online manual that may be of use:  http://balrog.sdsu.edu/~wstrombe/frontpage_manual.htm

Troubleshooting

If you have a problem connecting to your website, please submit a HELP DESK ticket.  Retrieval of lost passwords and server information will be sent to you upon request for free.  Nicayla Enterprises, Inc. does not guarantee that they can help you with your FTP client or editor.  There are hundreds of options out there, and we do not claim to be experts at what you are using.  If you have questions regarding the use of software, it is best to contact the software vendor - as they will be able to answer your questions more economically than we can.  After all - we are experts at web design and application development - they are experts at the product they created!
